The new show, Spinning Out on Netflix is a show that is filled with angst and drama about an ice skater, Kat Baker that have pressure from her family to get the Olympics but when a fall happens the ice skater has a sense of fear from going up in the air. The show follows Kat Baker and her mental illness that is genetic from her mother. It shows a reflection of mental illness and how it affects multiple people and not just the person who is dealing with a mental illness.
Spinning Out has aired on Netflix and have a total of 10 episodes each episode is about almost an hour long. The show does not slow down at any point and next thing you know you already done with the first season of Spinning Out.
The characters was definitely interesting and showed change throughout the ten episodes of the show.
The character, Serena Baker at some point can be annoying and can make the audience have a sense of anger in Serena's actions but as a human you can understand that dealing with a mother that has bipolar and a sister that has bipolar can shape you as a person especially when you are only 16 years old. The creators and the writers did an outstanding job of writing this character that can relate to other people in her situation and made sense over her own actions that she did up until the final episode of Spinning Out.
The next character, Justin Davis, the love interest in the show. It was predictable of him and Kat being together from the first scene. Justin Davis showed a cliche character of a player who has been hurt before but not by scorned lover but rather the death of his mother. It was remarkable to see the change in Justin throughout the show. It also nice to portrayed him learning to accept Kat with her bipolar disorder and it was nice to see him not address Kat by her bipolar disorder.
Finally, Kat Baker, the title character in Spinning out was a great character and that was down to the writing and the actress, Kaya Scodelario who showed a great range of playing the character in mania and not in mania, on medication and not on medication. We see the evolution of the character each episode and how she gets over her trauma of cracking her skull when landing on the ice. We also see her accepting her bipolar disorder and confessing her secret that she kept a secret from everyone else.
In the end Spinning out was remarkable show that Netflix had that discuss a range of issues from mental illness, sexual assault, trauma, death and racial injustices in minor ways. Spinning Out was focused mostly on mental illness and what it does to everyone in your life and how covering up your mental illness tends to make things worse for the person who has it and the people the who is around it.
I would recommend this show to anyone who is interested in topics of mental illness. The show stuck it's landing.
