A new show on Netflix has been released. It’s a show that contains music from past and current artists. It tells a story through the use of the music and narration. The show is called Soundtrack. One day I decided to watch the show when I could not find anything I wanted to watch on the platform. Soundtrack sounded like a creative and unique show with my hopes being in the middle. It contained drama, happiness and sadness all at the same time. I decided to watch the whole season. So here is my opinion over the entirety of the show Soundtrack.
The show had promising ideas that was unique but at the end of the ten episodes, I was bored with the storytelling of the show. I even fast forward through some parts. The narration set the tone for the show and it was quite unique on the opening scene being with the main character addressing how all songs are love songs and with a close up shot on him, the audience could tell that this character known as Sam was crucial and that we the audience would see his story, his love story.
When I first watched the show, I expected actors to sing the popular songs with their own voices, but I was shocked to find out that they were just lip syncing the popular songs. After a while of watching the show, I got used to the songs they chose to use. Props and praise are given to the actors who had to learn choreography for this show and express emotions through their faces while singing songs that was not their own. There were couple original songs that the cast did sing to add to the story of Nellie and Sam.
The cast was definitely a combination of recognizable faces and not so recognizable faces such as Jenna Dewan who portrayed a character who wanted to be a dancer and Jahmil French from the hit Canadian Tv show Degrassi.
In the end, Soundtrack was not for me due to the constant singing and the many characters of the show. It took some time to get used to the time jump from present to past between the characters. At the last episode, I did enjoy how it went back to the opening shot of the first episode and it was in a way of explaining the first scene and how the scene was conveyed and what it was about. It was a nice way to tie up loose ends. I wished the audience had a chance to see the progression of Nellie's illness or her pregnancy. Who knows maybe Netflix is setting that up for next season if Soundtrack is renewed.
