All the Bright Places did it Go Dark or Go Light.

The latest movie adaptation from book by Jennifer Niven has been revealed as All the Bright Places. It was officially released on Netflix. It stars Elle Fanning with Justice Smith (Detective Pokemon) as the main characters. The movie plot is centered around this girl (Violet) who has to start living her life after the death of her sister and she starts learning how to through the character played by Justice Smith (Finch).

Now I tend to lean towards dark, edgy movies that center around death and angst that teens face in life. All the Bright Places contains elements of mental illness from depression, the grieving process. In that sense I liked how the writers and director faced showing mental illness and how it is important to have a support group for it.

The actors did a wonderful job with the script but to me the movie seemed not interesting enough due to lack of action. As for the characters, I could not find one character that I was rooting for. I kept hoping something would have some shock factor but instead I felt nothing towards the end of the movie. I could not feel sympathetic towards any character.

I do think it could have made more emotional impact throughout the film to have some flashbacks of Violet and her sister and as well as little Finch. We learned their backgrounds through dialogue but talking about their past experiences and their childhood all the time seemed to make the movie slow. Having shown action instead of telling would have made the movie better in my opinion.

The one scene that could have benefit from a flashback is when the scar on Finch is revealed to be done by his father. Audiences could have seen that through a flashback while having Finch voiceover was happening. Even the ending was far from shocking to me and I think the ending of movies are supposed to have some element of shock and make people feel a certain way but it lacked.

In the end the movie was in my genre of movies I like to watch from the plot, to the characters but in the end the movie fell flat. Therefore I would give this movie a 2.5 stars out of 5 stars. All the Bright Places did go Dark.
